One to two percent of the population, mostly women, possess a significant scoliosis, the lateral curvature of the spine.

Learn about the history, categories, and classifications of scoliosis along with the current theories about how scoliosis develops in the skeleton.

Learn how to identify the differences between and the management of functional versus structural scoliosis, their varying causes.

By exploring both the spinal and fascial mechanics, learn the elements of what can and probably what cannot be changed and how this applies to the Pilates Method.

Course Objectives:

Objectives:         Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Define the terms of scoliosis and identify the major types and physical signs of scoliosis
  2. Understand the history of scoliosis care
  3. Generally describe the evolution of the human skeleton as it applies to scoliosis
  4. Describe normal bone development
  5. Describe the current theories on the developing spine, including the Neuro-Osseous theory, the V-H Law, and the Vicious Cycle
  6. Describe the type classifications
  7. Describe the types of spinal bracing and other helpful appliances for those with scoliosis
  8. Better understand the difference between structural and functional scoliosis, and  the interplay of muscle, fascia and bone in those with scoliosis
  9. Compare and contrast the normal mechanics of the spine and ribcage with those with scoliosis
  10. Explain the differences of what can and cannot possibly be changed through intervention in the Pilates environment
