Assessment techniques for Scoliosis management
■ Introduction
The Pilates Method is well-suited to help with the dilemma of pain and dysfunction associated with populations who have scoliosis, the lateral curvature of the spine. Learn postural and 3 -dimensional analysis to train your eye to the ‘individual differences’ each client uniquely owns. Additionally, learn functional assessment techniques that help to direct intervention for the biomechanical implications of curvature not only at the separate spinal curves but through the whole body. Create a profile to not only help you to help your client but to also help the client to better understand their present postures and strategies. You cannot change what you cannot see.
We must look globally, act locally, and then act globally to integrate our local remedies in the whole person’s structure” – Thomas W. Myers, Anatomy Trains
■ Objectives
Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Explain the use of a gravitational plumb line for posture analysis purposes
- Identify the normal gravitational spinal curves
- Perform a posture screen from the sagittal view to identify deviations from the normal gravitational spinal curve
- Identify superficial anatomical landmarks useful in creating a profile for exercise for a person with scoliosis
- Explain the importance of these superficial anatomical landmarks in creating a 3-dimensional observation analysis of the client
- Explain the use of an axial trunk rotation screen.
- Explain the reason for use of functional assessment tests in creating an exercise plan for a person with scoliosis
- Perform 8 functional assessment tests helpful in creating an exercise plan for a person with scoliosis
- Create a 3-dimensional profile of a client with scoliosis
- Create a strategy and preference profile of a client with scoliosis
